Soccer earns fourth shutout of season with 3-0 victory over Baylor

AUSTIN, Texas -- Amy Burlingham and Caitlin Kennedy each tallied three points and Dianna Pfenninger recorded her first-career shutout as Texas earned its first Big 12 Conference victory of the season with a 3-0 win over Baylor in front of 1,264 fans at Myers Stadium on Friday, Sept. 30.
Texas (4-5-1, 1-2 Big 12) snapped its two-game skid and recorded its fourth shutout of the year, while Baylor (2-6-1, 0-3 Big 12) dropped its fourth game in a row as the Longhorns held the Lady Bears scoreless for just the third time this season. Additionally, with the victory, the Horns, whose three goals on the night marked the team's highest offensive output of the 2005 season, have now won 16 of their last 17 home games.
Ashley Foster (Athens, Ga.) put the Longhorns on top 1-0 in the 12th minute when she took a feed from Jill Gilbeau (San Diego, Calif.) in the center of the box and headed a shot past Baylor keeper Ashley Holder for her first goal of the season. Notably, Burlingham (Costa Mesa, Calif.) found Gilbeau streaking down the right side to set up the goal. A little less than four minutes later, Burlingham netted her first score of the season to stake the Longhorns to a 2-0 advantage as she headed a rebound of a Kennedy (Euless, Texas) shot off the crossbar into the back of the net. From there, Pfenninger (Sugar Land, Texas) and the UT defense made that lead stand up heading into intermission.
In the second half, Baylor upped its offensive attack with six shots in the period, including two on goal, but it was Kennedy who scored next off a corner kick in the 55th minute to give the Longhorns a 3-0 lead on her first goal of the 2005 season. Although Baylor had its best scoring chance of the game in the 64th minute when Amanda McGrath broke in and launched a shot to the right side of the net, Pfenninger made a diving stab to her left to preserve the shutout. While Pfenninger (Sugar Land, Texas) made two saves in the shutout to push her season record to 2-3, Holder had seven saves in the loss and the Lady Bears defense added a team save when they cleared a Tracey Whitely (New Braunfels, Texas) shot off the goal line following a corner kick. Of note, the Longhorns outshot the Lady Bears 27-10, including an 11-2 edge in shots on goal, and also had 12 corner kicks to Baylor's two.
With a goal and an assist apiece, Burlingham and Kennedy's three-point efforts marked career highs for both players to pace the UT offense. The Bears, meanwhile, had their attack led by Tiffany Boshers, who fired a match-best five shots on the night.
Up next, the Horns take on No. 13 Texas A&M at Myers Stadium in the State Farm Lone Star Showdown on Sunday, Oct. 2. The match, which will be televised by ESPNU, is slated to start at 1 p.m. Central.
