Soccer earns 0-0 tie with Michigan State

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Although outshooting the Spartans by a 16-9 margin for the match and 5-3 during the two overtime periods, Texas settled for a 0-0 tie with Michigan State in front of 550 fans at Old College Field on Sunday, Sept. 4.
With the tie, the Longhorns, who earned their third shutout in four matches this year, moved their record to 2-1-1, while the Spartans had their record upped to 1-1-2 on the young campaign.
Michigan State had the first scoring chance of the contest within the first 10 minutes of action during a breakaway opportunity, but UT starting goalkeeper Dana Hall (Kingwood, Texas) came up with a big save to keep the match scoreless. Texas then earned a corner kick during the 20th minute of play that defender Stephanie Logterman (Austin, Texas) lofted into the box, but the header by fellow freshman Kasey Moore (Mission Viejo, Calif.) found its way just above the crossbar to keep the game deadlocked. The 0-0 tie persisted into the halftime intermission despite the Horns holding a 9-3 advantage in the shot category.
In the second half, UT had another chance to grab the lead as freshman Erin Davis (Yardley, Penn.) broke in behind the MSU defense in the 70th minute, but Spartans goalkeeper Nicole Galas made the save on Davis' shot to keep the score knotted at 0-0. The game would remain that way through 90 minutes before both teams prepared for overtime. While Texas would outshoot Michigan State 3-2 in the first overtime and 2-1 in the second extra period, neither side was able to penetrate the respective defenses and had to settle for the scoreless tie. Galas made six saves on the afternoon for Michigan State while Hall and Dianna Pfenninger (Sugar Land, Texas) made one and two saves, respectively, in goal for the Horns.
"Our team fought hard today," UT head coach Chris Petrucelli said. "Our attack was solid, but we did not create enough scoring chances. Overall, we played better than we did on Friday evening and gave ourselves a chance to win. We have some big games in front of us, so we will need to work on improving our possession and get some rest after a very physical weekend against Michigan and Michigan State."
Headlining the offenses on the day were forward Kelsey Carpenter (Allen, Texas) for Texas, who fired a match-best six shots, and midfielder Maureen Pawlak for Michigan State, who tallied two of her team's nine shots on the afternoon. Of additional note, junior Priscilla Fite (Irving, Texas) also located three of her four shots on goal to help fuel UT's attack.
Up next, the Longhorns travel to Provo, Utah, for an 8:30 p.m. Central match against BYU on Monday, Sept. 12.
