MOBILE, Ala. -- Texas OG Will Allen, CB Cedric Griffin and OT Jonathan Scott played in the 2006 Senior Bowl on Saturday in Mobile, Ala., but their South team lost to the North, 31-14. The teams played evenly with the exception of multiple muffed punts by the South that led to North scores.
Griffin made one of the biggest plays of the day for the South, as he intercepted a pass in the end zone from Vanderbilt QB Jay Cutler on the North's first possession of the game. Griffin also had three tackles and played on special teams. Scott started the game on the offensive line for the South and gave key protection on the its first TD, which was a 30-yard pass from Alabama's Brodie Croyle to Miami's Sinorice Moss. He also served as the deep snapper on special teams, a role he served as a backup for the Longhorns. Allen was in for the South's second TD, which came in the fourth quarter on a 17-yard pass from UAB's Darrell Hackney to Auburn's Devin Aromashodu.
The trio were the first Texas players in the Senior Bowl since Nathan Vasher in the 2003 season, and it marked the first time three Horns have played in the same game since WR Mike Adams, FS Chris Carter and OG Dan Neil in 1996.
In 2005, ten Senior Bowlers were chosen in the first-round of the NFL Draft and 83 players were drafted overall. Ninety-five percent of last year's Senior Bowl players made active rosters in the NFL in 2005, including the NFL's Offensive Rookie of the Year - running back Cadillac Williams of Tampa Bay.
Over 560 former Senior Bowl players were on active rosters in the NFL in 2005. Twenty-six former Senior Bowlers were named to rosters for this year's NFL Pro Bowl game including the league's MVP, running back Shaun Alexander of the Seahawks, and Bears' linebacker Brian Urlacher, the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year.
The Senior Bowl is also a non-profit, charity event that, together with its charitable partner Food World, distributed over $1.2 million to charities in 2005.
