No. 10 Soccer ties Oklahoma in double overtime

AUSTIN, Texas -- Despite tying the third-highest offensive production of the 2006 season, the tenth-ranked Texas soccer team tied Oklahoma, 3-3, on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 1) at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas.
Goals by senior Ashley Foster (Athens, Ga.) and juniors Kelsey Carpenter (Allen, Texas) and Leslie Imber (Houston, Texas) were not enough to give UT the win as the Longhorns recorded their first tie of the 2006 sseason.
With the tie, UT's record this year, under eighth-year head coach Chris Petrucelli, stands at 8-3-1 and 2-1-1 in the Big 12 Conference while the Sooners move to 3-8-1 and 0-4-1 in the league.
Ten minutes into the match, Carpenter found the back of the net for her career-high ninth goal of the season.
Senior Amy Burlingham (Costa Mesa, Calif.) set up the play with a pass from the far side of the field into fellow senior Carrie Schmit (La Mesa, Calif.). Schmit was surrounded by OU defenders just outside the goal and managed to fire at the Oklahoma net. Sooners' goalkeeper Jennifer Nichols deflected Schmit's shot, which bounced to Carpenter who kicked it into the open net.
UT held a one goal advantage until the 36:43 mark, when Oklahoma senior Kady Kelly set up junior Audrey Habibi for the first OU score.
The Texas offense built another lead, putting the ball between the Oklahoma goal posts, less than three minutes later. Imber found the back of the net on a cross from freshman Emily Anderson (Austin, Texas), 39 minutes, five seconds into the game. The score gave the Longhorns a 2-1 advantage heading into intermission.
UT scored just over two minutes into the second segment of the game. Burlingham coordinated another drive, finding Foster outside of the Sooners' net at the 47:45 mark.
OU answered later on in the match, with goals from senior Kady Kelly and freshman Daphne Fitzpatrick, 65:03 and 71:00 into the game. The first score cut the UT lead to one goal and the second, tied the match at three all, setting up Texas' third overtime contest of the season.
In the first overtime, Oklahoma took two shots while UT attempted one, with both teams coming up short of the scoreboard.
In the second overtime, each team took two shots, before time expired and the game ended in a tie.
Each goalkeeper was battered by the opposing offense. The Longhorns' Dianna Pfenninger (Sugar Land, Texas) recorded two saves on 16 Oklahoma shots in 110 minutes and the Sooners' Nichols registered five saves on 21 Texas attempts.
The Longhorns return to action and television, with a CSTV tape-delayed Big 12 match at Kansas on Friday, Oct. 6, at 4 p.m. (Central). Texas then heads to Colorado for a 2 p.m. (Central) tilt with the Buffs in Boulder on Sunday, Oct. 8.
Notes: Anderson's assist on Imber's goal in the opening period was the first point of her career... Imber's goals was the second of her career, with the first coming earlier this season (Nicholls State - Sept. 15)...The three Oklahoma goals scored marks the first time this season the Texas defense has allowed an opponent to find the back of the net three times... UT has not lost an overtime match in 2006, boasting a 2-0-1 record. Texas beat consecutive opponents in overtime earlier this season. In the match against No. 13 Illinois in double overtime, UT won 1-0 on Sept. 3 in Austin. In the next contest, at New Mexico, Texas outlasted the Lobos, 2-1, in overtime on Sept. 7.
