Seven different Longhorns score in Soccer's 7-0 shutout of Sam Houston State

AUSTIN, Texas -- Using goals from seven different Longhorns, the Texas soccer team took an all-time record 46 shots in their 7-0 victory over visiting Sam Houston State at Mike A. Myers Stadium on Friday, Oct. 13.
Guided by eighth-year head coach Chris Petrucelli, UT's record now stands at 11-3-1 and 4-1-1 in the Big 12 Conference. SHSU dropped to 3-12-0 (1-4-0 Southland Conference). Texas closed out the non-conference portion of the season with a 7-1 record.
Seniors Amy Burlingham and Priscilla Fite, junior Caitlin Kennedy, and sophomores Jill Gilbeau, Stephanie Logterman, Kasey Moore and Megan Upah all scored in front of a crowd of 703 fans.
The Longhorns combined an aggressive offense and stingy defense to contain a Bearkat team that could not find an opportunity to score. UT showcased a controlled attack during the match, out-shooting the Bearkats 46-3.
The 46 shots taken by the Texas offense shattered the previous all-time school record of 39, which came against Texas Tech on Oct. 9, 2005. The Longhorns' 2006 season-high was 37, recorded at the Nicholls State game on Sept. 15.
"It took a little time to break them down but once we did, we got on a roll, especially in the last 25 minutes or so," commented Petrucelli. "We are very capable of scoring goals which we showed tonight."
The Longhorns' defense, anchored by starting goalkeeper Dana Hall (Kingwood, Texas), registered two saves on three shots during the entire game. Hall recorded her second shutout of the season and her eighth career blank. She is third on UT's all-time career shutout list. Texas has outscored opponents 13-0 when she has been in goal this year.
"Dana's a great goalkeeper," said Petrucelli. "She's played a lot of games in her career and when she gets the opportunity she always plays well."
Burlingham (Costa Mesa, Calif.) sparked the offense with a goal, nine minutes, 35 seconds into the match. The senior utility player sent a clean shot (on a pass from sophomore defender Moore - Mission Viejo, Calif.) past the arms of Bearkat goalkeeper Melissa Sauceda, for the only goal of the first half.
No one would score for the remainder of the first half.
At intermission, Texas entered the locker room with the score 1-0. UT took 21 first-half shots and eight opening-period cornerkicks. Sam Houston State countered with one shot and zero cornerkicks in the first-period.
After trading possessions to start off the second half, Texas quickly added two goals to create a comfortable 3-0 lead. Logterman (Austin, Texas) dribbled up the far side of the field and into the SHSU goalkeeper box. At 66:42 on the clock, she fired a shot into the right side of the net for her second goal of the season and her two-year career.
Less than a minute later, junior midfielder Caitlin Kennedy (Euless, Texas) chipped the ball over the head of Sauceda for her first goal of the season, just 68:09 into the match. On the score, freshman defender Casey Mogk (Lake Highlands, Texas) picked up the assist to set up the shot for Kennedy.
Gilbeau (San Diego, Calif.) joined the list of scorers with a header into the net off a cross by junior forward Yobel Gaski (Springfield, Va.) at the 80:35 mark.
In the final five minutes of the game, UT would score three more goals to close out the game at 7-0. Moore got her first goal of the season at 84:53, when her header found the right corner of the net on a pass from senior midfielder Priscilla Fite (Irving, Texas).
Fite became one of two Texas players to record a goal and an assist in the game against SHSU, scoring her own goal at the 87:19 mark, on a dribbler by Sauceda. Moore scored the fourth goal of the match and assisted the first score by Burlingham.
"It felt good," said Moore, following the match. "It was great to have every one score and spread it across the team. This was great for the team because we got to work out any kinks we had.
"I got the ball of a cornerkick from Priscilla Fite," continued Moore. "It came up top and I headed it into the far post. I didn't see it but I just know everyone was running at me afterwards."
In the final 10 seconds of the match, Upah (Cedar Park, Texas) notched her first goal of the season, off an assist from senior defender Karen Haight (Beaverton, Ore.).
Texas resumes Big 12 action this Sunday, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m. (Central) as they take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers in Lincoln, Neb.
GAME NOTES: Of Burlingham's four scores this year, three have been the first UT goal of the game... Three Longhorns recorded their first goals of the 2006 season - Caitlin Kennedy, Kasey Moore, Megan Upah... 10 Longhorns scored a point in tonight's match, with four scoring points for the first time this season (Haight, Mogk, Kennedy, Gaski)... UT has scored 17 goals during the second-half this season, in comparison to 10 first-period scores... The Texas defense continues to dominate outscoring its opponents 34-14 through 15 matches.
