AUSTIN, Texas -- The tenth-ranked Texas soccer team tied the school record for most regular season wins, with a 4-1 victory over Iowa State on Sunday, Oct. 22, in front of 546 fans at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
UT moves to 14-3-1 and 7-1-1 in the Big 12 while Iowa State drops to 6-13-0 and 2-7-0 in the league. Texas clinched third place in the Big 12 with Sunday's (Oct. 22) victory.
The win ties the 2002 team with the best regular season record (14-3-1) by a Texas squad. It is the third time in eight seasons under Petrucelli, the team has won at least 14 matches in an entire season.
Senior Amy Burlingham (Costa Mesa, Calif.), junior Kelsey Carpenter (Allen, Texas), sophomore Stephanie Logterman (Austin, Texas) and freshman Emily Anderson (Austin, Texas) scored goals for the Longhorns.
Sophomore goalkeeper Dianna Pfenninger (Sugar Land, Texas) was credited with the win, registering two saves and allowing one goal in 90 minutes of action. She is tied for first place on the all-time single season win list with Shay Wilkerson, who amassed 12 wins in 2000. She is tied for third on the all-time career wins list with 21 (Cami Varnadore, 1996-99).
Texas took a quick 2-0 lead in the first period on scores by Burlingham and Carpenter.
Burlingham put Texas on the board with a shot 19 minutes, 28 seconds into the half. She scored the first goal of the game for UT for the fourth time this season. The senior now has five goals this season and 14 in her career.
"I was outside and I got the ball," said Burlingham. "I was looking for a cross but saw the goalkeeper was off her line and I just snuck it in."
Schmit passed to a streaking Carpenter who ran through the center of the field into a one-on-one with the ISU goalkeeper Ann Gleason. She tapped a slow roller into the right side of the net for the eventual game-winner.
In the second period, the Longhorns continued to attack as Burlingham crossed from the right side into the center of the goal. Anderson found the loose ball and kicked it past Gleason into the Cyclones goal.
Sophomore defender Stephanie Logterman (Austin, Texas) added one more to the scoreboard, with her third goal of the year, at 82:46.
Texas fired 26 shots with 12 attempts on goal. The four goals scored are the most this year against a Big 12 opponent and third most in a match this season. UT scored seven times against Sam Houston State and registered five goals against Nicholls State.
Iowa State's lone score came at 78:07, when senior Jess Villhauer passed inside to freshman Lauren Odino. The Cyclones offense took nine shots, putting three on goal. The Texas defense held ISU to zero corner kicks.
ISU's Gleason recorded eight saves and allowed four goals in 90 minutes of action.
UT has held its last six opponents to a total of three goals. UT has allowed 16 goals through 18 matches and only five scores in the second period of all of its contests.
With Carpenter's goal, she moves into a tie for fifth place with Carol Finch (1996) with 11 goals in a single season. She is the fifth player in the last 10 seasons to score 11 or more goals in one year.
The Longhorns end the regular season with the match against the Aggies in the 2006 State Farm Lone Star Showdown on Friday, Oct. 27, 2006 at 7 pm (Central).
"Right now we're excited to play A&M because it's a big game. We're going to work on settling the ball and moving it around. We're just ready to get back to practice and play and get focused for Friday. Ever since my freshman year, we've had a pretty good record against them. They are doing really well this year and I think it's going to be a great game."
Notes: Texas is unbeaten when it scores a goal, boasting a record of 13-0-1... UT is 10-0-1 when Carpenter registers a point... UT normally is not a first half team, scoring the majority of their goals in the second period... Burlingham has scored first for the Longhorns four times this season... Burlingham's participation in the match tied her for first all-time in matches played.
