Colt McCoy sustains stinger
11.12.2006 | Football
Freshman QB Colt McCoy was sidelined for the game after sustaining a stinger on Texas' first drive at Kansas State on Saturday, Longhorns athletic trainer Kenny Boyd said on Sunday. He will continue to be evaluated during the bye week.
"After the injury, Colt experienced shoulder weakness and neck pain," Boyd said. "When evaluating injuries, we look for return of normal strength and a reduction of pain before putting a player back into the game. Colt wasn't released to play because his symptoms, including strength, did not improve."
McCoy had completed all four of his passes for 51 yards and led UT on a 14-play, 80-yard scoring drive that consumed 6:53 off the clock to open the game. He sustained the injury during a one-yard TD run that put the Horns on top, 7-0. The TD run was the 29th TD McCoy has accounted for this year. That mark is third on the UT all-time season list, trailing only Vince Young (35, 2005) and Chris Simms (30, 2002).
"I'm really disappointed I wasn't able to be in there helping my teammates, but I'm going to be fine," McCoy said. "We have a great staff of trainers and doctors, and I've already started working with them to get my injury taken care of. The off-week couldn't come at a better time. I'll do everything it takes to get back."
Senior OG/T Justin Blalock, a finalist for the Lombardi Award and an Outland Trophy candidate, sustained an injury to his left knee during the game. He also will continue to be evaluated as UT prepares for its annual rivalry with Texas A&M on Friday, Nov. 24 (11 a.m. CT; ABC). A win in that game would secure a spot in the Big 12 Championship game against North Division champion Nebraska on Saturday, Dec. 2, in Kansas City (7 p.m. CT; ABC).
"I'm really pleased with how hard the guys fought and never gave up on the game," Mack Brown said. "We've been a little unfortunate with injuries this year, but we can't use that as an excuse. When Colt went down, Jevan (Snead) didn't even blink. He came in and did a terrific job. When Justin was hurt, Dallas (Griffin) moved in at center and Lyle (Sendlein) took over at guard, and they did a great job. There's no quit in this team and I'm extremely proud of them.
"Even though we played so hard, we made too many mistakes. We are disappointed and have a lot of work to do, but excited about what's still out there. We'll go back to work and get ready for Texas A&M. We still have our primary goal in front of us and that's to win the Big 12 South Championship and get to the Big 12 Championship Game."
