Texas redshirt freshman QB Colt McCoy has been named National Freshman of the Year by The Sporting News, the magazine has announced. McCoy was also named to its 2006 Freshman All-America first team, along with OT Adam Ulatoski. Tight end Jermichael Finley earned honorable mention honors.
This season, McCoy has completed 191-of-278 passes (68.7%) for 2,262 yards (No. 3 on UT's freshman list) and 27 TDs (second-most on NCAA single-season freshman list/No. 1 on UT's single-season list/No. 6 on the UT career list), while throwing seven INTs. In total, McCoy has tallied 2,429 yards of total offense (No. 1 on UT's freshman single-season list).
McCoy was a semifinalist for the 2006 Davey O'Brien Award (nation's top QB) and was also named Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year by the conference coaches and The Associated Press, among others.
Ulatoski has started the last six games of the season at tackle. He has helped the Longhorns rank fifth nationally in scoring offense (36.8 ppg), 23rd in total offense (392.6 ypg) and 30th in rushing offense (170.3 ypg).
Finley is having the most productive season by a freshman tight end in UT history. Finley finished the regular season with 23 catches for 326 yards and three TDs. He tops the freshman tight end chart in all three of those categories.
