Spann earns NCAA automatic qualifier at Texas Invitational

AUSTIN, Texas -- UT sophomore Alexi Spann's NCAA automatic-qualifying swim in the 200-yard breaststroke highlighted the Longhorns' performance Saturday morning during the day three preliminary round of the Texas Invitational. Texas scored five berths in tonight's finals, which are slated for a 6 p.m. start at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
Spann (Austin, Texas) took third in the 200 breaststroke preliminary round in 2:13.58, falling just under the NCAA "A" cut standard of 2:13.65. Senior Elizabeth Tinnon (Bowling Green, Ky.), who rewrote her own school 100 breaststroke record during Friday's finals, took fifth in a NCAA provisional-qualifying time of 2:15.11. Senior Leah Avilla (Livermore, Calif.) added one more NCAA "B" cut time for sixth place in 2:15.72 to earn a spot in tonight's finals.
Senior Connie Brown (Andover, Mass.) landed a berth in this evening's 100 freestyle final by placing fourth in 50.14. Senior Katie Robinson (Dillsboro, Ind.) collected the last Texas finals bid, taking sixth in the 200 butterfly with a NCAA "B" cut time of 2:01.03. Sophomore Jacqueline Martin-Lacey (Nashville, Tenn.) also recorded a NCAA provisional-qualifying time, touching the wall in 2:01.82 for ninth place. She will compete in this evening's "B" final.
Junior Macie Garrett (Nashville, Tenn.) will compete in this evening's 1,650 freestyle final. She was not required to qualify for the finals during the preliminary round.
Saturday's swimming finals begin at 6 p.m. Central at the Texas Swimming Center. A live results link will be available at TexasSports.com.
