INDIANAPOLIS -- The University of Texas baseball program earned an at-large bid to the 2006 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship as a regional host site and earned the No. 3 national seed in the 64-team field as announced by the NCAA Selection Committee on Monday, May 29.
While this appearance marks the 48th for the Longhorns (40-19) in the NCAA Tournament, it is the 35th regional tournament that they will host and the third time they have been awarded one of the top eight seeds in the tournament field (2002 - 5th, 2004 - 1st) since that practice was adopted. Additionally, this bid to the tournament field is the eighth consecutive for UT (1999-2006), which is attempting to advance to its fifth straight College World Series (CWS), and as a national seed will allow the Horns to host an NCAA Super Regional Tournament should they advance out of the Austin Regional.
Included in the Austin Regional at Disch-Falk Field will be UT-Arlington (29-34), N.C. State (38-21) and Stanford (30-25). Whichever of those four teams advances out of the double-elimination Austin Regional, which begins on Friday, June 2, will move on to face the winner of the Corvallis (Ore.)Regional (Oregon State, Wright State, Hawaii and Kansas) in a best-of-three NCAA Super Regional for the chance to become one of the final eight teams to advance to the CWS in Omaha, Neb. Notably, a league-record seven Big 12 schools received bids to the tournament field (Texas, Nebraska, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Baylor, Kansas and Missouri) with the Huskers also earning the No. 6 national seed.
Tickets for the Austin Regional may be ordered online at www.TexasBoxOffice.com, by phone at 1-800-982-BEVO or (512) 471-3333, or in person at the UT Athletics Ticket Office in Bellmont Hall between 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Central beginning on Tuesday, May 30. The Disch-Falk Field ticket office will also be open from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Central from Tuesday, May 30 through Thursday, June 1 and will open two hours prior to the day's opening session on all game days during the regional tournament.
