NEW YORK -- Former University of Texas basketball standout Daniel Gibson was selected as the No. 42 pick by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2006 NBA Draft on Wednesday evening at Madison Square Garden.
Gibson becomes the third UT player selected in this year's draft, joining LaMarcus Aldridge (No. 2 by Chicago and traded to Portland) and P.J. Tucker (No. 35 by Toronto). This marks the first time in school history that the Longhorns have had three players selected in the same draft.
Gibson is the 10th player in school history to be selected in the second round and the 33rd player overall taken since the NBA Draft began in 1947. He also is the eighth UT player to be drafted in the last eight years.
One of 16 finalists for this year's Bob Cousy Award as the nation's top point guard, Gibson earned first-team National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-District 9 honors and was an All-Big 12 Third Team selection. He ranked third on the team in scoring (13.4 ppg) and set a school record for most three-point field goals made in a season (101). Gibson started all 68 games in his two seasons at Texas and ranks sixth on the UT chart in career three-point field goal percentage (.387).
