Robison named to Bednarik watch list
06.30.2006 | Football
The Maxwell Football Club has announced the inclusion of UT senior DE Brian Robison on its Chuck Bednarik Award watch list, honoring the Outstanding Defensive Player of the Year. Robison becomes the fourth Longhorn selected to the list, joining senior DE Tim Crowder, senior S Michael Griffin and junior DT Frank Okam. Former LB Derrick Johnson was a finalist for the award in 2004.
Robison is a two-sport star who has already been named to the Hendricks Award watch list for the nation's top defensive end. He has played in 37 career contests with 27 starts. He was an honorable mention All-Big 12 selection in 2005 after finishing with 58 tackles and leading the team in tackles for loss (15) and sacks (7). He also recorded 10 pressures, four PBD, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and a blocked field goal. The blocked field goal gave him five for his career (No. 2 on UT's all-time blocked kicks list). An NCAA qualifier in the discus and shot put, Robison earned All-America honors in the shot put by finishing second at the 2006 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, and followed that with a fourth-place finish at the U.S. National meet in June. He also won the Big 12 outdoor shot put and discus titles in 2006.
The selections to the watch list are made by the Maxwell Football Club Advisory Committee. Additions and subtractions to the lists, based on player performance, will be made throughout the 2006 football season.
Twelve semifinalists will be announced in October 2006 and the field will be trimmed to three finalists in November 2006. The winner of the Bednarik Award will be announced at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show that will be broadcast on ESPN in December 2006. The formal presentation of the Bednarik Award will take place at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Banquet in March 2007.
