SACRAMENTO -- University of Texas junior Andra Manson (Brenham, Texas) was one of two Longhorns to earn All-America honors Friday as he placed second in the high jump to lead Texas on day two of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the A.G. Spanos Sports Complex. UT sits in seventh place with 17 points heading into the final day of action.
Manson, the 2004 NCAA indoor and outdoor high jump champion, found himself in quite a battle with a familiar foe, Southern California's Jesse Williams. Manson and Williams were the only jumpers to clear 7-5 before the bar was raised to 7-6 ¼. After Manson missed on his first attempt and Williams cleared on his first attempt, Manson elected to pass on his next two jumps at that height as the officials raised the bar to 7-7 ¼. Manson missed his two attempts while Williams cleared the bar once more to win the title. Manson becomes a five-time All-American with his second-place finish.
Junior Derek Randall (Beeville, Texas) capped an outstanding postseason run with an eighth-place finish in the discus to garner All-America honors. Randall took eighth with a toss of 182-9 (55.70m) to become UT's first discus All-American since 1986, when Doug Lowell collected All-America honors 20 seasons ago.
Texas' 4x100-meter relay team of seniors Trey Griffin (Lockhart, Texas) and Ronald Hill (Walnut, Calif.), freshman Jamaal Charles (Port Arthur, Texas) and senior Quincy Boles (Harker Heights, Texas) took fifth in 39.22. Boles becomes a two-time 4x100-meter relay All-American after garnering similar honors in 2004.
With a spot already secured in Saturday's 100-meter final, Charles added a second event to his final-day schedule, as he placed sixth in the 200-meter semifinals in 20.65. Sophomore Hamza Deyaf (Richardson, Texas) competed in his second NCAA 400-meter hurdle semifinal in as many seasons and placed 15th in 51.62.
