American Junior National Champion Schmidt headed to World Championships

BEIJING -- Incoming University of Texas freshman Shawn Schmidt (Plano, Texas) will represent the United States at the 11th IAAF World Track and Field Junior Championships in Beijing, China from August 15-20, 2006. Schmidt is one of 82 athletes (43 men and 39 women) in the American delegation and one of two U.S. decathletes entered in competition.
Schmidt opens competition on August 16 with the 100-meter dash at 9:00 a.m. (8:00 p.m. Central on Monday night), followed by the long jump, shot put, high jump and 400-meter dash. The remaining events (110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500-meter run) are scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. (8:00 p.m. Central on Tuesday night) on August 17.
Schmidt, who graduated from St. Mark'sSchool of Texasin May of 2006, secured a berth by winning the USA junior decathlon championship at the 2006 Finish Line USA Junior Track and Field Championships from June 21-22 in Indianapolis. He totaled 7,264 points and bested eight of 20 athletes with one year of collegiate competition to their credit.
