Texas senior RB Selvin Young has been named a candidate for the 2006 Doak Walker Award, honoring the nation's top college running back, the Guaranty Bank SMU Athletics Forum announced today.
Young is a fifth-year running back who, despite injury trouble, has played in 37 career games, starting five. He has 2,104 career all-purpose yards and has scored 21 total TDs. He is the only player in UT history to return a punt and a kickoff for a TD in the same game (New Mexico State, 2003). Young has averaged 4.9 yards per carry for his career with 1,122 yards on 228 carries with 18 rushing TDs. In 2005, he rushed for 461 yards and six TDs on 96 carries and earned UT's D. Harold Byrd Leadership Award.
Young has participated in the Longhorn Leaders program, an organization that mentor's local elementary and middle school children. He is also a member of UT's Athletics Director's Honor Roll for a 3.0 GPA.
The Guaranty Bank SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will select the semifinalists on Nov. 15, and the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee will vote to determine the finalists on Nov. 16. The committee will cast a second vote on Nov. 27 to determine the recipient. The National Selection Committee consists of former NFL All-Pro and college All-America running backs, media members and selected special representatives.
The recipient of the 2006 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on ESPN along with other NCFAA member awards on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, Dec. 7. The Doak Walker Award Presentation Banquet will be held at The Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas, Texas, on Thursday, Feb. 15, 2007.
The award, in its 17th year, is named for SMU's three-time All-America running back Doak Walker. It is the only major collegiate award that requires all candidates to be in good academic standing and on schedule to graduate within one year of other students of the same classification.
