Volleyball improves to No. 7 in CSTV/AVCA Poll

AUSTIN, Texas -- After posting three victories over ranked opponents, including a pair of wins over top 10 teams, The University of Texas volleyball team moved up one spot to No. 7 in the first CSTV/AVCA Coaches Poll of the regular season on Monday.
Head Coach Jerritt Elliott's Texas squad improved on their preseason No. 8 ranking after knocking off No.9 Wisconsin, 3-0 and No. 3 Washington, 3-1 on Aug. 26-27 at the AVCA Showcase in Madison, Wisc. The Horns posted another victory over a ranked opponent at the Asics Classic last weekend in Malibu, Calif., when they edged No. 19 Pepperdine, 3-2 and added another victory with a 3-0 win over Long Island.
Dariam Acevedo anchored the Texas attack at the Asics Classic for the second straight weekend, totaling a team-high 55 kills on .291 hitting for the tournament, while posting her team best fifth straight match with double digit kills. After being named AVCA National Player of the Week, Aug. 29, Michelle Moriarty paced the Horns offense with 161 assists (13.42 pg), while both players were named to the all-tournament team.
Nebraska is ranked No. 1 in the CSTV/AVCA poll, released Monday. The Huskers are followed by No. 2 Penn State, No. 3 UCLA, No. 4 Santa Clara and No. 5 Washington. Missouri joins Nebraska and Texas as the third Big 12 school in the poll at the No. 15 spot.
Texas plays host to No. 2 Penn State, No. 4 Santa Clara and No. 15 this week at the 2006 Time Warner Cable Invitational. Penn State and Missouri, kickoff the tournament Thursday, Sept. 7 at 4 p.m., and Texas and Santa Clara square off in game two, slated for a 6:30 p.m. start.
Game one Friday features Santa Clara and Missouri at 4 p.m. and Texas takes on Penn State at 6:30 p.m. The Horns match with the Nittany Lions will broadcast live on CSTV.
Tickets can be purchased at or at the Gregory Gym ticket windows 60 minutes before the first match. Reserved seats are $9, general admission is $7 and senior citizens and children are $4.
