Former UT assistant coach Tim Brewster will be named head coach at the University of Minnesota at a press conference on Wednesday, the school announced today.
Brewster coached under Mack Brown for a total of 13 years at Texas (1998-2001) and North Carolina (1989-97), and is the fourth of Brown's UT assistants in nine years to be named a head coach. That list includes Dick Tomey at San Jose State, Greg Robinson at Syracuse and Gene Chizik at Iowa State.
"Tim worked with us for 13 years and is not only one of the best football coaches I've ever coached with, but he's also a great friend," Brown said. "He's a high-energy guy who has gained experience and been a part of winning programs at every level. He's had success as a high school head coach, as an assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator at two major college football programs and coached with two of the best NFL coaches ever in (Denver head coach) Mike (Shanahan) and (San Diego head coach) Marty (Schottenheimer).
"He's loyal, passionate, and I've never been around anyone that works harder. Tim is a great football coach and recruiter with a bright future as a head coach. Minnesota is lucky to have him. Glen Mason did a great job at Minnesota and Tim will build on that."
Since leaving Texas, Brewster has spent five seasons in the NFL, including the last two as tight ends coach with the Denver Broncos and three seasons in the same position with the San Diego Chargers.
