Rowing places three teams in top five at Head of the Oklahoma

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The University of Texas Rowing team claimed three top five finishes in the women's pair as it took to the Oklahoma River for its first race of the 2007-08 season at the Head of the Oklahoma.
The pair of sophomore Nancy Arrington and senior Emilie Sallee posted a time of 18:17.655 to take second place in the women's pair, crossing the finish behind Australia, which recorded a time of 16:54.884. Freshman Jennifer Vander Maarel and sophomore Lindsay Foster teamed to take third place, crossing the finish in 18.22.348, while the team of junior Lianna Burton and senior Danielle Bartz notched a fourth-place finish and posted a time of 18.54.655.
Freshmen Tajana Lovric and Jelena Zunic paired to claim seventh place, crossing the finish in 19.10.477 and the tandem of seniors Alex Janss and Megan O'Hargan finished in 19.33.350, taking ninth place. The final UT pair of seniors Abby Hahn and Kindal Keen notched a 10th-place finish, crossing the line in 19.49.267.
"The team showed some strengths today and we now have a good picture of where we are this fall," Texas head coach Carie Graves said. "The team clearly trained hard over the summer and it showed today."
The Longhorns' first varsity eight of coxswain Mary Cait McPherson, stroke Luise Fleischhauer, Arrington, Vander Maarel, Callie Mattrisch, Bartz, Lovric, Janss and Sallee claimed a fifth-place finish in the women's collegiate eight-plus race. Texas' first eight crossed the finish in 15.27.215, while the third eight finished eighth (15.46.299) and the second eight finished 14th (16:36.839).
"Our team has some good depth and we are ahead of where we were at this point last year," Graves said. "We performed well, but there are a lot of things that we need to continue to work on."
Texas returns to the water on Saturday, Oct. 27 at the Head of the Colorado on Lady Bird Lake in Austin. The Longhorns will send another crew to the Princeton Chase on Sunday, Oct. 28 on Lake Carnegie in Princeton, N.J.
