AUSTIN, Texas -- Junior defender Kasey Moore scored the game-tying and game-winning goals as the sixth-ranked Texas Soccer team won, 3-2, over No. 12 Missouri in front of the second largest home crowd of the season (1,770 fans).
The Longhorns (11-2-2, 4-1-1 Big 12) went down 2-0 just eight minutes into the game after the Tigers' offense (10-4-0, 4-2-0 Big 12) played aggressively from the first touch.
Missouri junior midfielder Janelle Cordia scored just two minutes and 30 seconds into the match to shake the Longhorns defense. Cordia put in a cross from freshman Alysha Bonnick for her first goal of the season.
MU sophomore Michelle Collins followed suit, putting the Tigers ahead, 2-0, at 7:37 on the clock. Collins scored her ninth goal of the year off a pass from sophomore midfielder Kristin Andrighetto.
Texas scoring leader, freshman Niki Arlitt (Houston, Texas), scored in the 28th minute to bring the Longhorns within one of MU.
Moore, a 2006 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-American, equalized the match at 2-2, eight minutes after Arlitt's goal. Moore netted her seventh goal of the season off a corner kick from junior midfielder Courtney Gaines (Sugar Land, Texas) at 35:17.
The Longhorns defense settled down after the early goal, holding the Big 12's most productive offense, scoreless for just over 82 minutes. UT junior goalkeeper Dianna Pfenninger (Sugar Land, Texas) allowed two goals for the fourth time this year and saved a season-high eight Missouri shots.
MU junior goalkeeper Mallory Forst played the first 45 minutes, allowing two goals and recording two saves. Sophomore Tasha Dittamore played the final 51:22, giving up the game-winner and recording four saves.
Texas hosts Kansas at 1 p.m. CT on Sunday, Oct. 21 at Myers Stadium.
STATS (UT-MU): Corner kicks 5-5, shots 16-17, fouls 9-15
POSTGAME QUOTES
HEAD COACH Chris Petrucelli
On speech before overtime period: I told them it was important to get the ball forward. It was important for us to drop in behind the ball in the back. It was important for us to take the momentum early in overtime. These things aren't won pretty quickly because it's easy to lose concentration.
On the win over the second-place team in the Big 12: It's a huge victory. It looked bad early on; it looked like it would be five or six [goal lead] the way we played. We got a chance to regroup and I just wanted to make sure [Texas] didn't quit. It's one of those things that hopefully we can ride the wave of momentum.
On giving up two early goals: We don't give up a lot of goals. So to give up two in a matter of five minutes, we looked shell-shocked. I let them know that it wasn't good enough.
JUNIOR DEFENDER Kasey Moore
On Petrucelli's speech before the overtime period: After our last overtime, against Nebraska, [Petrucelli told us to] take hold of the game from the very beginning and set the tone. Try to get a goal at the very beginning. [Petrucelli] always says set the tone at the beginning, and we're going to get chances right away. Also, take control of the game again because we kind of lost it towards the end. We just attacked [Missouri] as much as we could and it ended up working.
On responding to the early, two-goal deficit: We let them score two goals in seven minutes; I don't think we've ever done that before. We had to regroup and not let them score to give our offense a chance to get us back in the game. When Emily Anderson got hurt, it gave us a chance to come in and regroup. We said, "It's okay. There's a lot of time left in the game." I looked up at the clock and there was still 30 minutes left in the first half, and we were down 2-0. As frightening as that is, there's a lot of time to come back. We felt really positive knowing that we were down 2-0, and [entering the half] now it's a new game again, and there's another 45 minutes left to play.
