Longhorns lead Big 12 in academic all-conference selections for second straight year

AUSTIN, Texas -- The Big 12 Conference named its 2007 Academic All-Big 12 Football Team on Tuesday, and for the second straight year, Texas led the conference with 23 selections, including 16 first-team accolades.
Texas' 16 first-team honorees were more than any other school in the conference had in its combined first- and second-team selections with the exception of Texas Tech, which totaled 16.
The first-team included junior K Ryan Bailey, senior FB Todd Bondy, senior LB Scott Derry, sophomore LB Dustin Earnest, senior C Dallas Griffin, junior DS Will Harvey, senior RB Stephen Lane, senior DT Derek Lokey, sophomore QB Colt McCoy, sophomore TE Mac McWhorter, senior DB Ryan Moench, junior RB Chris Ogbonnaya, senior DT Frank Okam, junior FB Luke Tiemann, junior QB Freddy Torres and sophomore OT Adam Ulatoski.
Griffin has now earned first-team honors all four of his years at Texas, while this is the third time Derry has been named to the first-team. Lokey earned first-team honors for the second straight year after being named to the second team in 2005. McCoy, McWhorter, Ogbonnaya and Ulatoski also earned first-team honors for the second straight year.
Seven others were named to the 2007 second team, including junior LB Rashad Bobino, sophomore P Trevor Gerland, sophomore OG Chris Hall, sophomore K Hunter Lawrence, sophomore S Ishie Oduegwu, sophomore OL Greg Smith and sophomore OG Charlie Tanner.
Gerland and Tanner also earned first-team honors last year, while Hall is on the second-team for the second straight year.
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the football academic all-league team consisted of 92 first team members combined with 59 on the second team. First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second-team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
