Novice Rowing wins at Head of the Hooch

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- The University of Texas Novice Rowing team finished first in the women's freshman novice eight-plus race Saturday afternoon at the 2007 Head of the Hooch on the Chattahoochee River.
Texas' first-place boat comprised of coxswain Andrea Crow, Crystal Ramirez, Beth Poffenberger, Rebecca Lewis, Maureen Kumar, Nicole Haupt, Abigail Hartland, Alana Martin and Christine McManamen posted a time of 19:23.9 in the victory, besting second-place Central Florida (19:29.3).
The Longhorns first novice-eight boat of coxswain Colby Lowrey, Sally Tunell, Sabra Thomas, Jamie Pausewang, Rebecca Quinlan, Kim Derichs, Britnie Franklin, Tara Detamble and Kathleen Leo completed the race in 19:29.8 and finished third.
The third novice-eight crew of Charlene Brickner, Rebecca Manriquez, Andi Christensen, Kayla Cecotti, Arissa Gaytan, Abbie Palmer, Elizabeth Dyer, Tara Saad and Nina Nguyen crossed the finish in 20:42.6 and placed fifth behind fourth-place Clemson (19:34.9).
The Head of the Hooch is a 5,000-m (three mile) head race on the Chattahoochee River and is the second largest head race in the United States. All boats started sequentially and raced against the clock.
Texas returns to the water to conclude its fall season on Sunday, Nov. 11 at the Rivanna Romp in Charlottesville, Va.
