No. 1 Rowing finishes runner-up at SEC Championship

The Longhorns totaled 75 points with victories by the II Eight and I Four.
OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – No. 1 Texas Rowing recorded a runner-up finish at the 2026 SEC Rowing Championship Sunday morning at Melton Lake.
No. 3 Tennessee registered 79 points to capture the conference title. Texas finished runner-up with 75 points followed by No. 13 Alabama (34 points) and No. 25 Oklahoma (32 points).
"Obviously, we didn't have the results we wanted today, but I'm proud of the effort every on the team gave," Texas head coach Dave O'Neill said. "Tennessee did a terrific job, and they're deserving SEC Champions. It came down to the final race, which is the way it should be. It was a terrific race, and they were simply faster."
"We'll regroup and get better from here. While disappointments and losses never feel good in the moment, it's times like these where the most growth happens. We'll learn from this and move forward, and I'm looking forward to what's ahead."
Texas won two of five races and posted a top-two finish in each race, highlighted by victories from the Second Eight and First Four.
Texas has recorded a top-two finish at a conference regatta in every season under O'Neill, including 10 conference championships.
The Third Four began the morning with a runner-up finish in 7:21.558, adding three points to Texas' tally. Tennessee won the race in 7:16.747, Oklahoma finished third in 7:40.496 and Alabama placed fourth in 7:45.998.
The Third Eight manufactured a runner-up finish in 6:37.105 while the Lady Vols won the race in 6:29.409. Alabama placed third in 6:53.101 and Oklahoma finished fourth in 7:12.007.
In the third race of the morning, the Texas II Four had a runner-up finish in 7:14.285 – less than two seconds behind first-place Tennessee (7:12.677). Alabama finished third in 7:36.224 and Oklahoma placed fourth in 7:40.473.
Texas' I Four cruised to an open-water victory in 7:06.227, dominating the race from start-to-finish. Texas continued to separate itself throughout the race. Tennessee finished runner-up in 7:13.742 and Alabama (3rd-7:29.310) and Oklahoma (4th-7:43.115) followed.
The Texas Second Varsity Eight captured the second win of the day after clocking in at 6:18.810 ahead of runner-up Tennessee (6:22.968), Alabama (3rd-6:40.405) and Oklahoma (4th-6:54.082).
In the final race of the day, the Texas I Eight battled with Tennessee, recording a runner-up finish in 6:08.400. Tennessee won in 6:06.939, Oklahoma placed third in 6:23.646 and Alabama finished fourth in 6:24.228.
