Late rally lifts Softball past Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 4-2

AUSTIN, Texas -- The tenth-ranked Texas Softball team fell behind early, but rallied to tie the game at 2-2, before tallying two runs in the top of the seventh inning to claim a 4-2 victory over Texas A&M Corpus Christi. The win moved the Longhorns into the No. 2/No. 3 seed semifinal game against North Texas at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
In the seventh inning, Texas (6-2) freshman infielder Loryn Johnson led off with a double down the left field line and then scored on Desiree Williams' RBI single. The Longhorns added an insurance run when pinch runner Brittany Reliford scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman leftfielder Kori Cook.
Longhorns freshman righthander Erin Tresselt (2-1) came on in relief of Torrey Schroeder in the fourth inning and tossed the final 4.0 innings, surrendering two hits and holding Texas A&M Corpus Christi (0-8) scoreless. Tresselt earned her second victory of the season, while Islanders starter Jennifer Cummings (0-7) took the loss after throwing a complete game and allowing four runs and scattering 11 hits.
Texas A&M Corpus Christi jumped out in front in the first inning, using a two RBI single by Adrian Gonzalez to move the Islanders ahead, 2-0. The Longhorns responded in the second inning with an RBI double by MicKayla Padilla and an RBI single by Shannon Thomas in consecutive at-bats. Padilla's double pushed sophomore rightfielder Kacie Gaskin across, and Thomas' single scored Padilla.
Texas returns to action at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 17 against North Texas. The winner of the game advances to the Texas Classic Championship game tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. against the winner of the San Diego State/ Texas A&M Corpus Christi semifinal game.
