Former Longhorn Bill Bradley hired as San Diego Chargers secondary coach
02.22.2007 | Football
Former Longhorn Bill Bradley has been hired by the San Diego Chargers to fill one of two secondary coaching positions on head coach Norv Turner's staff. Bradley, who most recently was the defensive coordinator at Baylor, signed a two-year deal with the Chargers.
Bradley, who was a 1988 inductee into the Longhorns Hall of Honor, served as a tri-captain on Texas' 1968 team that finished the season 9-1-1, tied for the Southwest Conference championship and ranked third in the final AP poll after defeating Tennessee, 36-13, in the Cotton Bowl. That year, in his final game against long-time rival Texas A&M, Bradley recorded a UT single-game record four interceptions in the Longhorns' 35-14 victory.
After his UT career, Bradley was selected in the third round of the 1969 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. He was a three-time All-Pro at free safety and led the NFL in interceptions in both 1971 and '72. Bradley played eight years with the Eagles before spending his final season (1977) splitting time with the Minnesota Vikings and the St. Louis Cardinals.
Bradley began his coaching career with the San Antonio Gunslingers of the USFL in 1983. He coached in the USFL, CFL and WLAF before joining the Buffalo Bills staff as the defensive backs coach from 1998-2000. Bradley moved on to become the New York Jets defensive backs coach from 2001-03 before heading to Baylor as the defensive coordinator.
