02.24.2007 | Softball
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. -- The Texas Softball team exploded for seven runs in the fifth inning to break a scoreless tie and down Nevada, 7-3, Saturday morning at the Palm Springs Classic. After being held scoreless over the first four frames, Texas' sophomore rightfielder Kacie Gaskin ignited the Texas (10-3) offense in the fifth inning hammering a grand slam to straight away centerfield.
The Longhorns rally began when sophomore leftfielder Shannon Thomas connected on a two-out single to shortstop. Thomas stole second on the next pitch and then came home when MicKayla Padilla reached on an error by Wolfpack centerfielder Sam Bias.
Senior catcher Megan Willis followed with an infield single and Loryn Johnson loaded the bases when she was hit by a pitch. Gaskin then stepped to the plate and slammed her fifth home run of the season to push the Texas edge to 5-0. Senior first baseman Jacqueline Williams reached on a dropped third strike after Gaskin's blast and came home on Tallie Thrasher's two-run homer over the right field wall. Thrasher's second round tripper of the year extended the Texas lead to 7-0.
Nevada (4-3) rallied for three runs in its half of the fifth, sending eight batters to the plate and recording four hits, but it would prove to be all the offense NU could musterb. A two-out, two-run double by Kym Silagyi jumpstarted the rally, and Brittany Puzey singled home Silagyi to pull the Wolfpack with four at 7-3.
Texas' freshman righthander Erin Tresselt (3-1) earned the victory for the Horns, tossing her first career complete game, going 7.0 innings, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out three. Nevada starter Katie Holverson (0-5) suffered the loss for the Wolfpack, throwing 4.2 innings and surrendering six runs on six hits, before giving way to Jordan McPherson, who gave up one run in 2.1 innings of action.
The Longhorns return to action Saturday, Feb. 24 at 3 p.m (Central) when they take on Ohio State at the Palm Springs Classic. Live stats for all of Texas' tournament games will be available on TexasSports.com.

POSTGAME QUOTES
Head coach Connie Clark
On Erin Tresselt's performance: We decided to switch things up today and go to Erin for the start, and she did a great job finishing up the entire game. She has given us a lot of quality innings as a reliever, but we want to continue to look at her in a starting role.
On Kacie Gaskin's game-changing performance: Kacie Gaskin was outstanding for us again today. We moved the lineup around to try to give her more chances with runners on base, so it was nice to see her to take advantage of her bases loaded opportunity today.
On the team's mental toughness: I thought we did a great job of continuing to battle over the first four innings when the game was scoreless. We really did a nice job of battling until we were able to figure out what the other pitcher was throwing.
