Durant tabbed Big 12 Conference Player and Freshman of the Year

IRVING, Texas -- University of Texas freshman standout Kevin Durant has been named the Big 12 Player and Freshman of the Year, highlighting the 2006-07 Phillips 66 All-Big 12 Men's Basketball Awards released by the league office today. Durant is the first freshman in league history to earn Player of the Year honors. The official All-Big 12 awards are selected by the league's head coaches, who are not allowed to vote for their own players.
Durant becomes the second UT individual to earn Player of the Year honors in the 11-year history of the Big 12 Conference, as P.J. Tucker claimed the accolade last season. A unanimous All-Big 12 First Team choice, Durant also earned a spot on Big 12 All-Defensive Team and the Big 12 All-Rookie team.
Durant is the first player in the Big 12 to score 400 points or grab 200 rebounds in conference play. He had a league-record nine 30-point games.
Durant set a record for scoring average in league games (28.9 ppg) and is on pace to break the overall mark with his 25.1-point average.
Freshman D.J. Augustin earned a spot on the All-Big 12 Second Team and the Big 12 All-Rookie Team, and sophomore A.J. Abrams was named All-Big 12 honorable mention.
The Defensive Player of the Year accolades were awarded to Mario Chalmers (Kansas) and Marcus Dove (Oklahoma State), while Stefhon Hannah (Missouri) was tabbed the Newcomer of the Year. Cartier Martin (Kansas State) captured the inaugural Sixth Man Award, while Billy Gillispie (Texas A&M) earned Coach of the Year honors.
