Q&A with Angel Williams
04.20.2007 | Track & Field / Cross Country w, Track & Field / Cross Country
Most people have a few hurdles in life.
Sophomore Angel Williams hurdles barriers every afternoon for fun at practice for the Texas women's track and field team. UT's top 400-meter hurdler, the Clarendon, Texas native has already met the NCAA regional qualifying mark. The former Texas high school state champion recently started training in the quarter-hurdles and is already experiencing success.
Williams sat down with TexasSports.com to evaluate the opening month of the 2007 season and preview the bulk of the championship season for the Longhorns.
The Texas Twilight is your final opportunity to run at home this year. Are you approaching this race any different than the previous meets? I feel like I really need to get it going. This is my last chance to be on our track and I want to do my best. It is kind of like practice out here, and it just helps us run so much better when we compete at (Mike A. Myers Track and Soccer Stadium). It just helps us prepare for the next level, such as going to the Big 12 Championship and then to regionals.
Are you eager to step on the track for the 400-meter hurdles on Saturday? I am really excited because last year I didn't do as well. This year I have already made it to regionals, and I am really excited and just ready for it to happen.
You have definitely had a successful year. What has been the highlight so far? The highlight was making it to regionals only the second time running the 400m hurdles. I have never run the 300m hurdles (a common high school race); I have only run the short hurdles. It was really exciting practicing for one week and then making it to regionals the next.
Looking ahead to the bigger meets of the season, what are you looking forward over the next couple of weeks? I am looking to getting my times down where I want them to be. I am looking towards running 57 (seconds), because I ran a 59 (seconds), but (head coach) Bev (Kearney) and I have talked about getting it down to a 58 or 57.
