AUSTIN, Texas -- The eighth-ranked Texas track and field team used the final home meet of the season to add to the growing list of NCAA Midwest Region qualifiers and showcase the nation's best talent at the 2007 Texas Twilight on Saturday, April 21.
Junior national champion Leo Manzano broke a year-old Mike A. Myers Stadium record in his season debut in the 1,500-meter run and senior All-American triple jumper Samyr Laine landed the nation's farthest triple jump mark this year. Nine Longhorns were event winners including two-time national champion Andra Manson, and All-Americans Jamaal Charles, Hamza Deyaf, Jacob Hernandez, Jake Morse, and Derek Randall.
Manzano shattered the stadium record and cruised to an NCAA regional qualifying mark in winning the 1,500-meter run in 3:42.10. Manzano was in front heading into the bell lap but was challenged by Rice's Pablo Solares, who holds the eighth-fastest time in the nation. Manzano extended his lead down the final stretch to win the race and break the old stadium best set by South Alabama's Vincent Rono at 3:42.69. Manzano now has four of UT's all-time top 10 performances.
The triple jump also proved to be a deep event as three Longhorns met the NCAA region mark and four Texas jumpers finished in the top five.
Senior All-American Samyr Laine (Newburgh, N.Y.) led the group, registering the nation's top triple jump mark in the country. The first-year transfer from Harvard landed in the pit at 53.6.25 (16.31m) for sixth on UT's all-time performers' list.
A trio of UT triple jumpers finished third through fifth. Sophomore Elliot O'Hare (Austin, Texas) improved his NCAA regional mark of 49-2.5 (15.00m) from the Texas Relays, by nearly half a meter on Saturday. He landed in the sand at 50-8.75 (15.466m) and took third place. O'Hare would later come back to meet the NCAA regional qualifying mark in the 110-meter hurdles (14.19 seconds).
Junior Joseph Davis (San Antonio), who holds the third-farthest jump in the nation, recorded a 15-meter distance for the third consecutive week. He posted a fourth-place mark of 50-6 (15.39m). Senior and Harvard transfer Lawrence Adjah (Piscataway) finished in fifth place with a mark of 49-1.5 (14.97m), just three centimeters from the region mark.
In the high jump, senior Andra Manson (Brenham, Texas) closed out his final collegiate appearance at Myers Stadium with a season-best effort of 7-4.5 (2.25m). The height is the second highest in the nation behind fellow Texas Twilight competitor Will Littleton of UT-Pan American. Junior Joel Hargett (Conroe, Texas) finished in fifth after clearing 6-8.75 (2.05m) and sophomore Raymond Harris (Nacogdoches, Texas) was ninth with a height of 6-6.75 (2.0m).
Sophomore Jamaal Charles (Port Arthur, Texas) ran a wind-aided 10.31 seconds in his 2007 season debut. The 2006 All-American 100-meter runner won his race behind a 5.4 wind reading.
Junior Jacob Hernandez (Magnolia, Texas) won the 800-meter dash and met the NCAA region standard in his season debut in the 800-meter run in 1:48.10. His mark moves him into fourth place on UT's all-time 800-meter runner list. He ran the fastest time since Sean Kelly at the 1987 Texas Invitational. Redshirt freshman Will Schroeder (San Antonio, Texas) clocked a season-best 1:54.43 for sixth place.
Junior All-American Jake Morse (Arlington, Texas) earned a trip to the regional meet, clocking 8:53.11 in his season debut. His mark is among the top 15 in the nation this year. He qualifies for his third consecutive NCAA region meet.
Fellow 3,000-meter steeplechaser Ryan Wilson (Wichita, Kan.) qualified for the second time this year, running 8:59.55 for second place. Senior Joe Thorne (Chamblee, Ga.) finished fifth in 9:13.98.
Although he is already ranked seventh in the nation, senior Hamza Deyaf (Richardson, Texas) inched closer to the top of the national scene, running 50.82 in the 400-meter hurdles to win the race. The time is a season-best and is near his lifetime best mark of 50.78, run at the 2005 NCAA Midwest Region. Fellow hurdler Alan Bean (Dalhart, Texas) was third in 54.34.
Senior Derek Randall (Beeville, Texas) and junior John Rouse (Kaufman, Texas) continue to anchor the NCAA regional qualifying throws group.
Randall outdistanced the field in the discus by almost 24-feet, as his implement landed at 198-3 (60.42m). He recorded a season-best throw and met the NCAA region mark for the fourth time in as many meets.
Rouse hit a lifetime best mark of 204-6 (62.34m) in winning the discus. He met the NCAA Region standard for the fourth time this season and improved his second-place mark on UT's all-time performers' list.
The 4x100-meter relay met the NCAA regional standard and took second in 40.63. Senior Brian Beach (Keller, Texas) and Davis ran the first two legs while sophomore Trevor Gerland (Katy, Texas) and Manson (Brenham, Texas) ran the final two segments.
Gerland returned later in the day to add his name to the NCAA Midwest Region travel roster, clearing the 110-meter hurdles in 14.10 seconds. Gerland, a punter on the UT football team, finished third overall in his first race of the season.
Junior Erik Stanley (Spring, Texas) added to the number of NCAA qualifiers, running 3:46.01 in the 1,500-meter run. He easily met the 3:47.80 standard.
Sophomore Dustin Bynum (Corpus Christi, Texas) used a lifetime best mark of 186-7 in the javelin to earn second-place in the event. Bynum, listed as a combined events athlete, improved his prior personal best by five inches.
Senior Owen Washburn (Amherst, Mass.) came in second in the 3,000-meter run, crossing the line in a personal best time of 8:25.72.
Redshirt sophomore Nick Baucum (Robstown, Texas) placed fourth in the shot put, tossing 52-5.25 (15.98m).
Combined events athletes Andrew Webb (Midland, Texas) and Shawn Schmidt (Plano, Texas) competed in open events. In the long jump, Schmidt registered a fourth-place distance of 21-8.25 (6.61m), behind a 2.2 wind reading, while Webb was fifth with a mark of 21-3.25 (6.48m) and a 1.7 wind reading.
