University of Texas C Lyle Sendlein signed a free-agent contract with the Arizona Cardinals on Monday. Currently, he is the only Longhorn on the Cardinals roster.
"I had about 20 to 25 teams call to check on my status, but my agent and I felt like Arizona would be a good fit," said Sendlein, who will return home after starring for Scottsdale Chaparral as a prepster. "It is a new coaching staff so everyone is starting fresh. I got a chance to speak with the staff and really liked what they had to say. I'm going to do everything I can from this point forward to earn a roster spot."
Sendlein played in 49 games while at Texas, starting the final 26 of his career. He was a two-time All-Big 12 performer, earning consensus first-team honors as a senior and honorable mention as a junior. A December 2006 graduate with a degree in liberal arts, Sendlein was a key cog in Texas'
2005 National Championship run. He helped the Horns set an NCAA single-season record in points scored with 652 and a UT single-season record with 6,657 total yards.
Sendlein, who is the son of former UT and NFL standout Robin Sendlein, is one of 20 rookie free agents signed by the Cardinals.
