University of Texas RB Selvin Young has agreed to sign a free-agent contract with the Denver Broncos. Young will join fellow Longhorns D.D. Lewis and Tim Crowder, who was taken in the second round of this year's draft, on the Broncos' roster.
"I've had conversations with the Broncos running backs coach (Bobby Turner) since the Pro Day at Texas," said Young. "I had a few other teams interested, but I was really comfortable with Denver and I think I have a good chance of making the team."
Young played in 49 career games, starting 16, and ranks 19th on UT's all-time rushing list with 1,713 yards to go along with 25 TDs. A versatile athlete, Young tallied 3,060 all-purpose yards during his career and returned two punts and a kickoff for TDs, while earning honorable mention All-Big 12 as an all-purpose back in 2006. He also is the only UT player in school history to return both a punt and a kickoff in the same game (New Mexico State, 2003).
"Not only do I want to compete as a running back, but I'm going to try and get on some of their special teams as well," added Young. "I've always enjoyed returning kicks, so hopefully I can get on a kickoff return team or something like that."
A December 2006 graduate with a degree in liberal arts, Young played a major role in Texas' 2005 National Championship season. He totaled 732 yards and eight TDs during the season and rushed for 45 yards and a TD in the Longhorns' victory over USC to win the BCS Championship.
