When did you know you wanted to become a football coach? My senior year in high school. I had always wanted to be an architect, but I was having so much fun playing and being involved in sports that I decided I wanted to get into coaching.
What is your favorite part about being a football coach? The relationships with players, coaches and all the people involved in college and professional athletics
What is your favorite part about coaching at The University of Texas? I think it is the great people here. The players are outstanding. They have great work ethic and pride. I think a lot of our staff and coach Brown, so my favorite part is working with these people and having a chance to compete for a National Championship.
Who has been the biggest influence on your life? My parents. I was very fortunate and blessed to have both parents at home. They were very involved with my life as far as my time as an athlete and a student. For a long time, they were very involved.
Who has been the biggest influence on your coaching career? There have been a lot of people that have really contributed to my coaching career. I've tried to take something from everyone I've had the privilege of working with. My junior college coach Hal Sherbeck, who I also worked with for six years, and Dick Tomey are the two people I worked with that really made a difference, but everyone has contributed.
What has been your proudest moment in coaching? The proudest moments I have are when players keep in touch with you through the years. You've recruited them, they've had a good experience in college and graduate and go on to start families, so to see them, have them come back and share some things that are going on in their personal lives. Those are the times I'm most proud.
What player(s) that you've coached do you believe got the most out of their ability? There isn't really one player that stands out. I just try to contribute as much as I can during their careers.
Players are often asked about their pregame routines. Do you have anything special you regularly do just before a game? I always have some pregame prayers, and postgame as well, because I am really blessed to have the opportunity to coach.
What do you think you would be doing if you had never gotten into coaching? I know that I would be an architect and in to building homes.
Do you have any special talents outside of football or what is your favorite thing to do away from football? I like to spend time with my family and vacation where it is quiet, warm and comfortable.
