Men's Track and Field's Manzano set for 2007 World Championship

AUSTIN, Texas -- Two-time NCAA Champion Leo Manzano will represent the United States Track and Field Team and the University of Texas at the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Track and Field Championships in Osaka, Japan.
Manzano will make his World Championship debut during the first round of the 1,500-meter run on Saturday, Aug. 25 at 11:25 a.m. local time at Nagai Stadium. The semifinals will be held on Monday, Aug. 27 at 8:40 p.m., and the final is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 29 at 10:05 p.m.
Manzano, the Longhorns' two-time NCAA champion, earned the spot on the U.S. Track and Field Team after finishing second at the AT&T U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championship on June 24 in Indianapolis, Ind. The six-time All-American recorded the fastest time in Texas school history, running three minutes, 35.29 seconds for runner-up honors. Manzano crossed the finish line behind American record holder Alan Webb, who shattered a 25-year-old meet record in the win, and ahead of Olympic medalist Bernard Lagat.
The 2007 season was the best of Manzano's three-year career on the Forty Acres. He won the NCAA Indoor Mile Championship and added a second All-America honor as the anchor leg of the eighth-place, distance-medley relay team. During the outdoor season, he became the first student-athlete in NCAA Midwest Region history to win three consecutive regional championships in a single event. Manzano was tabbed the 2007 NCAA Midwest Region and NCAA South Central District Track Athletes of the Year. At the 113th Penn Relays Carnival, Manzano garnered the 2007 Penn Relays Most Outstanding Male Athlete in the college relays division after running on two victorious relays for the Longhorns.
