AUSTIN, Texas -- The No. 7 Texas soccer team used two first-half goals, separated by a one hour, 42 minute rain delay, to defeat TCU, 3-1, in the regular season opener at Mike A. Myers Stadium on Friday, Aug. 31.
NSCAA All-Americans Kelsey Carpenter (Allen, Texas) and Kasey Moore (Mission Viejo, Texas) each scored a first-half goal while Carpenter added a second goal in the 68th minute of the game.
Texas, led by ninth-year head coach Chris Petrucelli, moved to 1-0-0 on the year while TCU dropped to 0-1-0 for the 2007 campaign. UT outshot the Horned Frogs 25-13 and held the advantage in cornerkicks, 6-3. All-Big 12 junior goalkeeper Dianna Pfenninger (Sugar Land, Texas) registered four saves and allowed one goal in 90 minutes.
"It was important to keep them hydrated because we didn't know when we were coming out of the delay," said Petrucelli. "One of our concerns heading in was whether or not they could stay fresh during the break. I thought they did a really good job of focusing when we came back out."
In the 27th minute of the game, Moore notched the first UT goal of the 2007 campaign when she put in the rebound off a block by TCU goalkeeper Kelsey Vross. U.S. National Team standout and junior defender Stephanie Logterman (Austin, Texas) took the initial shot against Vross before Moore found the back of the net at 26:48.
After the lengthy rain delay, UT continued to put pressure on the TCU defense as Carpenter scored off a cross from Logterman with six seconds remaining in the first half (44:54).
In the second half, Carpenter scored on a pass from freshman Kirsten Birkhold (Scottsdale, Ariz.), who made her first career start.
The Longhorns held the feisty Horned Frog offense off the board until freshman Jenna Hayes connected on a pass from fellow rookie Jackie Torda at 86:27 on the clock.
Texas travels to Houston's Robertson Stadium for a neutral-site match with No. 2 UCLA on Sunday, Sept. 2, at 7 p.m. CT. The Bruins were scheduled to play Houston on Friday night (Aug. 31) in their season opener but the game was cancelled after a two-hour weather delay.
