No. 4 Soccer ties LSU, 2-2, in double overtime
09.18.2007 | Soccer
AUSTIN, Texas -- The fourth-ranked Texas soccer team equalled LSU, 2-2, in double overtime in front of the largest crowd of the season (2,008) on Tuesday, Sept. 18 at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
The Longhorns move to 4-1-1 in the first overtime match of the 2007 season under ninth-year head coach Chris Petrucelli. LSU (5-0-1) ties its opponent for the second consecutive match as the Tigers fought to a 0-0 tie against Houston on Sunday, Sept. 14.
Freshman Niki Arlitt put the Longhorns on top early in the first half, as she found the back of the net off a pass from sophomore forward Emily Anderson (Austin, Texas), 14 minutes, 19 seconds into the match. Arlitt chased the ball down after LSU cleared junior midfielder Courtney Gaines' corner kick. Arlitt then passed to Anderson in an open space just outside the 18-yard box. Anderson gave the ball right back to Arlitt who shot over a leaping LSU goalkeeper Valerie Vogler into the far corner of the net.
LSU answered with a goal from sophomore forward Rachel Yepez at 19:14, which would stand until halftime.
In the second half, U.S. National Team standout Stephanie Logterman (Austin, Texas) found streaking NSCAA All-American Kelsey Carpenter (Allen, Texas) just outside of the six-yard box to put UT ahead 2-1 in the 54th minute of the match.
Carpenter's team-leading fifth goal of the year gave Texas the advantage for a short-lived period of time as Yepez found junior forward Roslyn Jones in a crowded box in front of the UT net. UT junior goalkeeper Dianna Pfenninger (Sugar Land, Texas) deflected the shot off a Yepez corner out of the net but Jones collected it for the equalizing goal.
On the night, Pfenninger (Sugar Land, Texas) allowed two goals and registered six saves. Texas' all-time winningest goalkeeper stands at 29-12-4 and 4-1-1 on the season.
Equally, Tigers' goalkeeper Vogler saved 14 shots on goal (nearing the UT school record of 19 opponent saves by Texas Tech on Sept. 11, 1994) and allowed two goals as well.
The Texas offense was active around the goal with 16 of its 32 total shots on goal. The Longhorns took nine corner kicks.
UT stifled LSU's attempts, holding the Tigers to 13 shots and three corners.
LSU held the advantage over Texas in fouls, 11-5.
Carpenter almost had the game-winner with just under four minutes remaining as she led a Texas 3-on-2 with the LSU defense. She kicked the ball ahead and crossed in front of the box before the Tiger defense cleared the ball away from the goal.
Senior midfielder Greta Carter (Arlington, Texas) almost netted the game-winner with less than two minutes remaining as she shot the ball high off a cleared corner by Gaines.
Texas kicks off "UT Soccer Letterwinners' Weekend" with a home match against Houston on Friday, Sept. 21 at Myers Stadium. UT continues the weekend in Austin with a match on Sunday, Sept. 23 against Stephen F. Austin. Both matches start at 7 p.m. CT.
TEXAS POSTGAME QUOTES
HEAD COACH Chris Petrucelli
On the tie with LSU: We played well. I'm not disappointed in the way we played, I'm just disappointed in the results. The biggest thing is that we had the lead a couple of times and we gave it up. That's not typical of what we do, especially in the second half.
On freshman Nikki Arlitt's play: Nikki did well. She's really good with her back to goal; she turns well and she creates a lot of chances going forward. She can get Kelsey in and Alisha in, and she adds a lot to our attack. We're a better team with her on the field.
FRESHMAN FORWARD Alisha Ortiz
On LSU's aggressive style: [LSU was] very pumped up for this game. They came out of the locker room playing really hard.
On UT's offense: We played well. We held possession very well, we just gave up two goals which hurt us. We got some offense going and had some chances that we just didn't put away. Our attack was better [than earlier in the season] and we came out hard but we can always come out harder to set a tone for the game. That's key in games. We need to show other teams we're out here to work hard and that's what we need to continually do.
