Hey Longhorn fans,
Welcome back for another week of Longhorn baseball. This week, due to the new baseball schedule changes, we were able to start the first of six weeks of full-team fall practices. It was great to get back out on the field for all of the returners, and it was equally as exciting for the new guys to get their first action as a Longhorn. It is always interesting to see how the young guys respond to their first taste of college baseball. For them, the practices are longer, faster, and significantly more mentally demanding than they are accustomed to, which adds to the adjustments they are still making. I will say this group is definitely further along than the typical group of college freshmen. They are really working hard and are cutting down the learning curve day by day, which can be one of the most crucial steps at this point in their young career.
Sunday was scout day, where all of the position players ran 60's, threw from their positions, and hit BP in front of about 50 scouts. Following the evaluations, we played a nine-inning scrimmage to conclude scout day. The scrimmage was very competitive and we had a lot of fun out on the field again.
Speaking of the field, the renovations at UFCU Disch-Falk Field are well on their way, and we are all anxious to see the finished product.
Off the field, I have been very busy with schoolwork. I have had three tests and a paper due since last Thursday, so I apologize for this week's journal being a little late. Last weekend went by pretty quickly with practice, hosting a recruit, and my parents being in town to celebrate my birthday. We went to the football game, of course, and got to see our guys get their last tune-up before conference play.
Oh yeah, one more thing before I sign off, I would like to give my weekly "props" to Randy Boone, who in his first two professional outings, went two innings, allowing no hits, no walks, and no runs. Randy is down in Dunedin, Florida for the Blue Jays' instructional league.
Well, that about does it for this past week's action, but check back next week to get a rundown of things that went on at "The Disch."
