No. 7 Men's Tennis tops SMU, 5-2

AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 7 Texas (1-0) swept the doubles session and tallied four singles in its season-opening 5-2 win over No. 47 SMU (0-1) Saturday at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
"This was a good win and a nice start to the season," UT coach Michael Center said. "We have some things we need to improve upon, but we did a lot of good things out there. We'll need to get better against Clemson on Sunday."
The Longhorns opened the match with a convincing sweep of the doubles session. Junior Miguel Reyes Varela and senior Hubert Chodkiewicz posted an 8-6 win at the second slot over the Mustangs' David Kuczer and Adolfo Solares before sophomore Josh Zavala and senior Luis Diaz Barriga clinched the doubles point with an 8-3 win at third doubles over Oivind Alver and Chris Hooshyar.
The Longhorns completed the doubles sweep at the first position as freshmen Ed Corrie and Kellen Damico posted an 8-5 win over Alex Skrypko and Robin Fahgen.
Corrie pushed the UT lead to 2-0 with a 6-4, 6-2 win over SMU's Skrypko at the third slot. Kutrovsky finished off Kuczer at the first slot, 6-2, 6-2, and senior Milan Mihailovic clinched the Longhorns' victory with a 6-2, 6-4 win at the sixth position over Hooshyar.
Diaz Barriga extended the UT cushion to 5-0 with a 6-2, 6-4 win over SMU's Alver at the fourth slot. The Mustangs sliced the final margin to 5-2 after collecting victories from Robin Fahgen at the second slot and Adolfo Solares at the fifth position.
Texas resumes play on Sunday against No. 30 Clemson. The match kicks off at 1 p.m. Central at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
