Rowing excels at Fighting Nutria

AUSTIN, Texas -- The Texas Rowing team had a successful outing at the 2008 Fighting Nutria, Saturday morning on Lady Bird Lake. The first varsity eight placed first among women's crews, while the second varsity boat finished second and the first novice boat claimed third.
The Longhorns first varsity eight of coxswain Mary Cait McPherson, stroke Luise Fleischhauer, Callie Mattrisch, Jen Vander Maarel, Kellie Lunday, Jelena Zunic, Emilie Sallee, Alex Janss and Nancy Arrington crossed the finish in 28:09.00.
Texas' second varsity eight boat completed the race second among women's crews, finishing in 29:07.0, while the Horns' first novice eight boat placed third, finishing in 30:00.0.
"The varsity had been really working on increasing their focus prior to this race and I feel like they did a good job this morning," head coach Carie Graves said. "The novices also looked very good racing in their first race of 2008."
The second novice boat finished sixth (31:41.0), the third novice eight finished seventh (31:55.0) and the fourth novice eight finished eighth (32:45.0).
The Longhorns lone varsity four boat comprised of Laura Perkins, Lindsay Foster, Whitney McMahon and Elizabeth Meserve finished the race in 33:39.0.
"After a good showing at the Fighting Nutria we are ready to move on to the 2,000 meter season," Graves added.
The Fighting Nutria is an 8,100 meter head-style race held annually on Town Lake.
