Schmidt, Greaves in top 15 after first day of Heritage Classic

NAMPA, Idaho -- Sophomore Shawn Schmidt and freshman Kenny Greaves finished in the top 15 after the first four heptathlon events at the United Heritage Classic at Jackson Track in Nampa, Idaho.
Schmidt (Plano, Texas) scored 2,934 points for eighth-place after day one while Greaves (Coppell, Texas) sat in 15th with three events remaining in his first collegiate heptathlon.
Schmidt cleared 6-4.25 (1.94m) for 749 points in the high jump to tie for third place. He added a sixth-place performance in the long jump, landing in the pit at 22-10 (6.96m) for 804 points. Schmidt tallied 703 points with a 7.53-second showing in the 60-meter dash. In the shot put, Schmidt threw 43-2.5 (13.17m) for 678 points and sixth-place.
Greaves ran a season-best 7.40 for 11th-place and 745 points in the 60-meter hurdles. The first-year Longhorn high jumped 5-10.50 (1.79m) for 619 points and 14th-place. He registered a season-best long jump of 20-4.5 (6.21m) and a point total of 632. He tossed 37-9.5 (11.52m) for 15th-place and 577 points.
Junior Andrew Webb (Midland, Texas) started the day with a fourth-place finish in the 60-meter dash. He ran 7.18 seconds, just two-hundredths of a second shy of his lifetime best, and scored 819 points. Webb did record a mark in the remaining three events of the day.
Schmidt and Greaves return to the track tomorrow to complete day two of the United Heritage Classic with the pole vault, shot put and the 1,000-meter run.
