Stacey Ann Williams wins silver 4x400 medal with Jamaica
TOKYO – Leo Neugebauer is now the world's greatest athlete winning the men's decathlon with a score of 8,804 points on the final day of the World Athletics Championships. Neugebauer now joins Trey Hardee as the only two Longhorns to have won the title after Hardee won in 2009 and 2011.
Neugebauer's win for Germany was the narrowest margin of victory at the World Championships, finishing 20 points ahead of Ayden Owens-Delerme of Puerto Rico (8,784) and 101 points ahead of Kyle Garland of USA in third. Between the three, the multis have combined for six NCAA heptathlon and decathlon titles (Owens-Delerme heptathlon 2022 and decathlon 2022, Garland 2023 heptathlon & Neugebauer 2023 decathlon and 2024 heptathlon and decathlon).
The 2024 Bowerman winner started the competition running the 100-meter in 10.80 seconds and jumped 7.62 meters in the long jump to put him into seventh place. His throw of 16.70m in the shot put moved him up five places with 2,765 points. He later cleared 1.99m in the high jump before running the 400-meter dash in 48.27 seconds to end the first day in fourth place with 4,455 points.
His climb to his title began in the 110-meter hurdles when he crossed the finish line in 14.80 seconds to move up one spot. Neugebauer made world history with the farthest-ever throw in the decathlon discus with a heave of 56.15m and moved up another spot to second. Neugebauer now owns the farthest discus throw as a decathlete in world and NCAA history (57.70m). He later cleared 5.10m in the pole vault to remain in second before taking the lead after his personal best 64.34m throw in the javelin. He finished the competition with the infamous 1500-meter and finished with a seven-second personal best time of 4:31.89.
The Longhorns have now won three decathlon world titles in the last nine World Championships.
Stacey Ann Williams of Jamaica also added a silver medal in the women's 4x400-meter relay. The Jamaicans finished with a time of 3:19.25 behind team USA to give Williams her third overall silver medal at World Championships.
