AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas sophomore infielder Loryn Johnson launched a pair of three-run home runs to lead No. 22 Texas past Wichita State, 9-2, Friday evening at the Texas Classic. The victory moved the Longhorns to 9-4-1 on the year, while the Shockers fell to 9-6.
Senior righthander Meagan Denny (8-1) earned the win for the Horns, throwing 5.1 innings of no-hit softball before allowing two hits in the bottom of the sixth. Denny fanned 13 in the win, surrendered two runs, none of which were earned and allowed five free passes. Wichita State's Ashly Bright (6-4) suffered the loss, giving up seven runs on eight hits, while striking out 12.
The Longhorns offense was paced by Johnson who went 3-for-4 with two roundtrippers, two runs scored and six RBI. Johnson helped mount the Horns' first rally, following an RBI single by junior outfielder Kacie Gaskin with a three-run homer in UT's four-run third inning. She added her second home run of the day in the fifth when she stepped to the plate with two runners on and hammered a two-one pitch to straightaway centerfield.
The Horns added two more runs in the sixth on junior third baseman Crystal Saenz' first home run of the season - a two-run blast.
Wichita State managed its only runs of the game in the sixth, using two one-out hits, a walk and a UT throwing error to move the tally to 9-2.
