No. 5 Men's Tennis falls to No. 1 Virginia, 5-2

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- No. 5 Texas (10-2) scored a win over the nation's top-ranked doubles team and a top-five upset from freshman Kellen Damico, but top-ranked Virginia (14-0) defeated the Longhorns by a 5-2 count Friday evening at the Boyd Tinsley Indoor Courts at the Boar's Head Sports Club.
Texas opened with an impressive showing in doubles play to assume a 1-0 lead. Virginia won at third singles, but Damico and freshman Ed Corrie upset the top-ranked duo of Somdev Devvarman and Treat Huey by an 8-5 count at first doubles. Senior Luis Diaz Barriga and junior Miguel Reyes Varela clinched the doubles point for Texas with an 8-6 win at the second slot over the 18th-ranked duo of Dominic Inglot and Houston Barrick.
Virginia evened the tally at one when Devvarman knocked off UT sophomore Dimitar Kutrovsky at first singles, but Damico responded with a 6-2, 7-5 win over the fifth-ranked Inglot at second singles to put Texas back on top. However, the Cavaliers took the remaining four matches in straight sets to complete the 5-2 victory.
Texas completes its weekend road swing when it visits No. 10 Duke on Sunday, March 2.
