DURHAM, N.C. -- No. 5 Texas secured the doubles point and dominated the singles session with wins in five of six matches to knock off No. 10 Duke by a 6-1 count Sunday afternoon at the Blue Devils' Ambler Tennis Stadium. The Longhorns rebounded nicely from their 5-2 loss on Friday at No. 1 Virginia to deliver their third win over a current or former top-10 opponent and their sixth victory over a top-25 team.
"I was a little concerned because we've had a difficult time winning here," UT coach Michael Center said, "but we came out and got the doubles point. I didn't think we were great in doubles, but we got the point. Our energy level in singles was outstanding, and I was really, really pleased with our effort."
Texas scored the doubles point with wins at the second and third positions. Sophomores Dimitar Kutrovsky and Josh Zavala opened with an 8-4 win at the third slot over Reid Carleton and Alain Michel, and senior Luis Diaz Barriga and junior Miguel Reyes Varela nailed down the point with a decisive 8-3 win at second doubles over Dylan Arnould and Alex Stone.
The Longhorns (11-2) immediately took it to the Blue Devils (2-3) in the singles session, winning three straight-set matches to clinch the victory. Freshman Ed Corrie posted a dominant 6-2, 6-0 showing over Arnould, and senior Milan Mihailovic pushed the Texas lead to 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Stone at fifth singles.
Diaz Barriga finished off the team victory with a 7-5, 6-1 win at fourth singles over Jared Pinsky. Kutrovsky later added a 6-4, 7-5 win over 33rd-ranked David Goulet at first singles, and Zavala chalked up the final point for Texas with a 7-6 (3), 6-2 win at the sixth slot over Aaron Carpenter.
"I think our guys just looked at each other after the doubles and said `let's play together as a team out there', and you could feel the energy level," Center added. "Overall, the guys did a fantastic job."
Texas returns home on Wednesday, March 5 when it meets No. 37 Old Dominion at 6 p.m. Central at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
