Four from Men's Basketball earn spots on All-Big 12 award teams

IRVING, Texas -- Four University of Texas players have earned spots on the 2007-08 Phillips 66 All-Big 12 Men's Basketball Awards, the league office announced today. In addition, head coach Rick Barnes was selected as the Big 12 Coach of the Year. The official All-Big 12 awards are selected by the league's head coaches, who are not allowed to vote for their own players.
Sophomore guard D.J. Augustin was one of six players named to the All-Big 12 First Team. Augustin and Michael Beasley (Kansas State) were the lone unanimous selections to the first team. A finalist for the Bob Cousy Award (nation's top point guard) and a strong candidate for All-America honors, Augustin leads the Big 12 in assists (5.7 apg) and ranks second in the league in scoring (19.8 ppg).
Junior guard A.J. Abrams and sophomore swingman Damion James were each named to the five-person All-Big 12 Second Team. Abrams ranks second on the team and fifth in the Big 12 in scoring (16.2 ppg). He became UT's all-time career leader in three-pointers made during the regular season. James leads the team and ranks second in the Big 12 in rebounding (10.7 rpg) and double-doubles (14) and is third on the squad in scoring (12.9 ppg). Sophomore guard Justin Mason earned a spot on the five-person Big 12 All-Defensive Team.
Barnes became the first coach to earn Big 12 Coach of the Year honors three times. He previously received the award in 1998-99 and 2002-03. Texas claimed its second Big 12 title and No. 1 seed in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship in the last three years. The 26 wins for the Horns set a school record for most regular season victories.
