HONOLULU -- Despite scoring first, The University of Texas managed just one run on one hit as North Carolina starter Lisa Norris twirled a one-hitter to knock off the Longhorns, 2-1, in game one of the Spring Fling Tournament at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
The loss dropped the Longhorns to 11-9-1 on the year, while the Tar Heels improved to 20-6. Texas reliever Erin Tresselt (0-2) suffered the loss for the Horns after allowing one run on three hits in 1.0 inning of relief. Senior hurler Meagan Denny started for UT, scattering one run and four hits over 4.1 innings before giving way to Tresselt. UNC starter Lisa Norris (7-3) went the distance for the Tar Heels, throwing a complete game, one-hitter, fanning six and allowing one run.
Texas recorded its first hit of the game in the fourth when sophomore designated player Tallie Thrasher smacked a two-out pitch high into the wind and over the left centerfield wall to break a scoreless tie and give the Horns a 1-0 edge.
The Tar Heels answered with a run of their own in the fifth, using a leadoff single and a walk to start their rally. A sacrifice bunt by Breanna Brown moved the runners into scoring position for pinch hitter Anna Roberts who singled home Alyssa Francona to even the tally at one.
Texas returns to action at the Spring Fling Tournament on Thursday, March 13, when it takes on Texas Tech at 7 p.m. Central and No. 16 Hawaii at 11 p.m. Central.
