No. 1 Softball’s 29-game win streak snapped in series finale against No. 15 Texas A&M

Texas fell in Sunday’s series finale, 9-7.
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 1 Texas Softball (31-2) fell to No. 15 Texas A&M (24-11), 9-7, in Sunday's series finale at McCombs Field. Despite Sunday's loss, the Longhorns end the weekend with a Cotton Holdings Lone Star Showdown series win after winning game one on Friday, 9-8, and game two on Saturday, 3-2.
Texas moves to 31-2 overall and 8-1 in Southeastern Conference play, suffering its first conference and home loss of the season. The Horns are 17-1 at home and 11-2 against ranked opponents. Texas' program and national best win streak of 29 games was snapped.
Finding themselves down 9-3 in the bottom of the seventh, Texas rallied with a four-run frame, highlighted by back-to-back solo home runs by Reese Atwood and Katie Stewart.
The Longhorns combined for seven runs on seven hits. Five of Texas' seven hits were for extra bases.
Junior shortstop Viviana Martinez drove in a team-high three RBI and finished 1-for-3 at the plate with a double, walk and stolen base. Martinez scored Texas' first run of the game on a delayed steal from third in the first. Senior catcher Reese Atwood went 2-for-4 with a towering solo home run in the seventh – her 14th home run of the season. Junior first baseman Katie Stewart smashed a solo home run in the seventh – her team-leading 17th of the season. Junior center fielder Kayden Henry had a 2-for-4 day with two doubles and two runs scored.
Junior RHP Teagan Kavan (13-1) suffered her first loss of the season in the start. Kavan went 5.2 innings, surrendering eight runs (six earned) on 11 hits with six punchouts. Freshman RHP Hannah Wells, who started the game at DP, tossed 1.1 frames of relief. Wells did not give up an earned run and limited the Aggies to two hits.
