No. 18 Women's Tennis tops Oklahoma State, 5-2

STILLWATER, Okla. -- No. 18 Texas (6-2) claimed the doubles point and took four of six points in singles play, as the Longhorns tallied a 5-2 victory over Oklahoma State (5-3) Friday afternoon at the DeBois Tennis Center.
Texas' first doubles tandem of sophomore Vanja Corovic (Belgrade, Serbia) and junior Marija Milic (Etobicoke, Ontario) tallied an 8-5 win over Yawna Allen and Iryna Tkachenko to clinch the doubles point, as OSU was forced to default at third doubles due to having only five healthy players. Freshman Maggie Mello (Laguna Hills, Calif.) and senior Courtney Zauft (San Antonio, Texas) scored an 8-7 win at the second slot over JoAnne Karaitiana and Sasha Belova.
Texas immediately assumed a 2-0 lead due to OSU's default at sixth singles. The Longhorns clinched the team victory with wins at the second and fifth singles positions. Zauft defeated OSU's Allen by a 6-2, 6-2 count at the second slot, and Mello defeated Maryna Tkachenko by a 6-0, 6-4 margin at fifth singles. Corovic registered the final point for Texas with a 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8) over Iryna Tkachenko at first singles.
"Despite injuries, OSU played really tough," said UT coach Patty Fendick-McCain. "Stephanie Davison and Caroline Larsson both got a little unlucky by having to play super-tiebreaks instead of playing out the third sets because anything can happen under those circumstances. I feel confident that they both would have won convincingly in the third sets had they been played out."
Texas resumes competition on Saturday at Oklahoma. First serve is set for 11 a.m. Central.
