No. 1 Northwestern drops Women's Tennis, 5-2

AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas sophomore Vanja Corovic upset the nation's third-ranked player, but it wasn't enough, as top-ranked Northwestern (14-1) scored a 5-2 victory over the Longhorns (8-4) Tuesday afternoon at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
Corovic (Belgrade, Serbia) dropped the first set to Northwestern's third-ranked Maria Mosolova but rebounded to take the second, 6-3. The final set was placed in a 10-point match tiebreak format, and Corovic, prevailed, 10-1, to earn the victory.
Northwestern opened the match by taking the doubles point, sweeping all three positions. The Wildcats added on to their lead when Nazlie Ghazal knocked off Texas freshman Maggie Mello (Laguna Hills, Calif.), 6-2, 6-4 at fifth singles. Northwestern assumed a 3-0 lead when 25th-ranked Samantha Murray defeated UT sophomore Stephanie Davison (Port Orchard, Wash.), 6-1, 6-4.
Texas got on the board at sixth singles when sophomore Sarah Lancaster (San Antonio, Texas) tallied a 7-5, 6-1 win over Suzie Matzenauer, but the Wildcats clinched the match moments later when fifth-ranked Georgia Rose set aside UT senior Courtney Zauft (San Antonio, Texas), 6-1, 7-5. Northwestern tallied the final point when 46th-ranked Lauren Lui defeated UT sophomore Caroline Larsson (Sodertalje, Sweden), 6-4, 6-3.
Texas resumes competition on Friday, March 28 when it hosts Iowa State at 1:30 p.m. Central.
