No. 20 Texas Tech edges No. 4 Men's Tennis, 4-3

LUBBOCK, Texas -- No. 4 Texas picked up singles wins from senior Luis Diaz Barriga, junior Miguel Reyes Varela and freshman Ed Corrie, but it wasn't enough Saturday, as No. 20 Texas Tech (18-3, 3-1) hung on for a 4-3 win over the Longhorns at Texas Tech's McLeod Tennis Center.
Texas (17-4, 3-1 Big 12) surrendered the doubles point for the first time in nearly two months, as the Red Raiders (18-3, 3-1) took the third and first doubles matches to clinch the doubles session. Texas' lone win of the session came at the second slot, where freshmen Ed Corrie and Kellen Damico posted an 8-4 win over Michael Breler and Sinisa Markovic. Texas had won the doubles point in 12 consecutive matches and had not relinquished the point since its 4-2 loss to Georgia on Feb. 16 at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship.
Texas Tech pushed its lead to 2-0 when Markovic handily defeated UT's Damico at second singles, 6-2, 6-0. The Longhorns got on the board at fourth singles when the 109th-ranked Diaz Barriga dealt Ilya Babinciuc a 6-4, 6-2 defeat.
The Red Raiders pushed their lead to 3-1 when Breler knocked off UT senior Milan Mihailovic by a 6-3, 6-3 count at sixth singles, but Texas drew within 3-2 when junior Miguel Reyes Varela hung a 6-4, 6-4 defeat on Tech's Christian Rojmar at fifth singles.
Texas sophomore Dimitar Kutrovsky pushed his match against Tech's 43rd-ranked Bojan Szumanski to a third set after dropping the first set, but Szumanski took over in the final set, winning 6-2 to clinch the match in the Red Raiders' favor. Texas' Corrie split his first couple of sets at third singles against Tech's Lenior Ramos before prevailing in the final set, 6-3, to provide the final point for the Longhorns.
Texas resumes competition on Wednesday, April 16 at Baylor. The match had been scheduled for Wednesday, April 9, but the match was postponed due to inclement weather in Waco.
