06.22.2008 | Women's Swimming and Diving
INDIANAPOLIS -- Former University of Texas diver Laura Wilkinson capped off a wire-to-wire victory in the platform diving event in impressive fashion to earn her third consecutive Olympic diving berth Sunday at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials-Diving.
Wilkinson (The Woodlands, Texas) finished off her platform victory with a total of 1,214.50 points. Notably, Wilkinson registered perfect scores of 10 from all seven judges on her third dive, a reverse, three-and-a-half somersault in the tuck position with a 3.4 degree of difficulty.
Wilkinson's nomination to the U.S. Olympic Team will become official when she competes at the U.S. Olympic Diving Selection Camp set for July 2-6 in Knoxville, Tenn. Texas rising senior Jessica Livingston will join Wilkinson at the selection camp after placing fifth on the platform at 1,014.60. Livingston will compete for the one remaining platform diving spot available on the U.S. Olympic team. Wilkinson and Livingston also will vie for an Olympic berth in the synchronized platform event at the selection camp.
UT senior Mary Yarrison (Springfield, Va.) took seventh in the three-meter springboard at 926.10 and just missed out on one of six spots available to participate in the U.S. Olympic Diving Selection Camp.
