AUSTIN, Texas -- The Texas football team will open the season as the nation's 11th-ranked team, according to The Associated Press Preseason Poll released on Saturday. With the No. 11 ranking, the Longhorns open the season in the poll's Top 15 for the ninth-consecutive season.
Texas has now been ranked in The AP Top 25 for 125 consecutive weeks, which is the nation's longest active streak and the Horns' longest stint in that poll since a 114-week streak from 1968-76.
It marks the sixth time Texas has been ranked 11th in the preseason poll, and the first since 1975, when the team finished with a 10-2 record, a No. 6 ranking and a 38-21 Bluebonnet Bowl victory over No. 10 Colorado. Texas also was ranked 11th in The AP Preseason Poll prior to the 1958, '53, '52 and '51 seasons.
The Longhorns have finished the year ranked in The AP Top 10 in five of the last seven years and are riding a UT-record streak of eight-straight AP Top 15 finishes. In addition, Texas has finished in The AP Top 15 in nine of Mack Brown's 10 seasons.
The Longhorns open the 2008 campaign on Saturday, Aug. 30, when they host Florida Atlantic at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium (6 p.m./Central/FSN PPV).
